Dog ticks can be very dangerous. You can’t imagine what a very tiny creature can do to an animal which is a thousand times larger than their own size. Ticks can cause a number of diseases, including paralysis. Female ticks secrete toxin that affects the mammal’s nervous system which soon produce a flaccid paralysis.  Flaccid paralysis is characterized by paralysis or weakness and reduced muscle tone.

It takes several dog ticks feeding simultaneously to trigger paralysis; paralysis usually starts 5-7 days after the tick attaches itself to the animal and feeds thru it. Animals can experience weakness and their hind legs are not coordinating properly.  After several hours, the front legs will be affected and soon after the legs can’t be moved at all. Next signs are difficulty with chewing, swallowing and breathing. The paralysis can also damaged the muscles required for respiration that’s why breathing is affected. Death can happen within hours.

Dog ticks paralysis can be prevented by removing the tick. First, get a pair of tweezers or special tick removal instrument. Grab the tick by the mouth or head parts and make sure not to grab it by the body as you might crush the body and force the bacteria to go into the dog’s bloodstream.  Pull the tick firmly and steadily outward. Do not jerk and twist the tick as you pull it out. After successfully removing it, put the tick in a bottle of alcohol to kill it. Do not just flush ticks in the toilet because they won’t die in that manner. Clean the bite wound area with antiseptic and wash your hands meticulously.

Make sure not to use your bare hands in removing dog ticks because they can cause diseases in humans as well.
